Write a sequence with follow-ups

Write a cold email sequence: steps and delays, follow-ups in the same thread, merge tags with fallbacks, spintax, and how a reply stops the sequence.

Open the Sequences tab. Each row is one step.

ColumnWhat it does
sequenceName, e.g. intro. Contacts use this name.
step1, 2, 3 …
delay_daysDays after the previous email. 3 = three days; 0.5 = twelve hours.
subjectStep 1 needs one. Leave it empty on follow-ups and they’re sent as replies in the same thread (“Re: …”). A follow-up with its own subject starts a new thread.
bodyPlain text. Line breaks are kept.

Personalisation

You writeRecipient sees
{{first_name}}Ann. If the cell is empty, this email is not sent and the row shows ERROR, so nobody gets “Hi {{first_name}}“.
{{first_name|there}}Ann, or “there” if empty
{{company|}}Company, or nothing if empty
{Hi|Hey|Hello}One of these at random, so emails aren’t identical
{{sender_name}}The display_name from Senders

Stop on reply: when someone replies (in the thread or in a new email), their sequence stops and the row shows REPLIED. Out-of-office replies don’t stop it unless you set STOP_ON_AUTO_REPLY to TRUE in Settings. Bounces stop the sequence and add the address to DoNotContact.

Writing tips: keep step 1 under 90 words with no links, ask one easy question, and make each follow-up shorter than the last. 3–4 steps is plenty.
